Sometimes if you are missing multiple teeth or even a full dental arch, dentures can be manufactured to replace the missing teeth as a natural looking and more cost effective alternative to dental implants. Dentures provide a removable solution to missing teeth for patients that want something minimally invasive that does not require any surgery or injections. They can be made to look very natural and comfortable to wear but will always have some limitations as they just rest on the gums. They can be used as a quick fix or temporary replacement whilst awaiting a more definitive option such as dental bridges or implant.
Types of dentures
Different types of dentures are available for different situations and your dentist will discuss which option is best for your individual case.
- Acrylic dentures – the most common material used for dentures, especially for full dentures. Rests on the gums.
- Cobalt chrome – A metal base for a more secure fitting and longer lasting denture. Requires healthy teeth to attach to.
- Flexible dentures – A lightweight, comfortable option; thinner and less bulky than acrylic, but again requires healthy teeth either side of the gap to wrap around.
- Implant retained dentures – By using between 2-4 dental implants we can secure the dentures in for a better fit and better retention. No more glue! (Link to implant dentures)
Denture care
Dentures must be removed overnight. Brush your teeth and gums without the dentures in, brush the dentures with a soft toothbrush and leave them in a pot of cold water overnight. Once a week, you can use a denture cleaner suitable for the material that your denture is. Please follow the manufacturer instructions.
